John and Pep Branfield moved to Cornwall in 1961 and were great supporters of the Cornish art scene. Over the years they built a collection of around 200 paintings and ceramics
which were sold at Lay's Auctioneers in Penzance on February 29th 2024.
The Branfield's ceramic collection was centered around Leach Pottery potters with work by
Bernard Leach, Janet Leach, Michael Cardew and Bill Marshall to name a few. They also purchased work by modern potters including Jason Wason, Peter Swanson and Sam Hall.
As these images show, David Lay presented the pots as if they were an exhibition.
Although his wife Pep has passed away, John Branfield is very much alive and gave a talk on the first auction viewing day.
